Independent Statistics Review

Strengthening statistics through independent review and assessment

Independent Statistics Review provides a stamp of quality assurance on statistics in Tanzania. The Statistics Reviewer is completely impartial and independent – however the Statistics Reviewer works closely with producers of statistics, including the National Bureau of Statistics, as well as users and funders of data.

Statistics review is a new concept jointly developed by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the accountability and transparency initiative (ACT) and Uwazi. Following international advertisement, Mr. Tim Harris was appointed as first Independent Statistics Reviewer. Mr Harris started working January 1st 2011.

Over the coming months a series of in-depth and lighter reviews will be conducted, with the reports available on the Statistics Review Tanzania website (under construction). The areas that will be reviewed over the next 6 months include:

•    Population statistics
•    The National Data Archive (NADA)
•    The Tanzanian Socio-Economic Database (TSED)
•    The NBS website
•    Hotel statistics and their contribution to quarterly GDP

In addition a dashboard of indicators will keep track of progress in key areas of the statistics system: monitoring timely release of statistics, progress of major projects such as the 2012 Census, delivery of donor funding commitments, and the milestones of the Tanzanian Statistical Master Plan.

The Independent Statistics Reviewer welcomes comments on the process and the outputs of Statistics Review Tanzania. You can get in touch and join the discussion on the website or by emailing: StatsReviewTanzania@gmail.com
