Twaweza in the news
The Citizen, a daily newspaper in Tanzania, featured an opinion editorial written by Rakesh Rajani, the Head of Twaweza, which had previously been published in the World Bank Institute's Development Outreach magazine. It argues that development experts in sub-Saharan Africa have little to show for their efforts over the past 50 years and quotes the example of the education sector in Tanzania. While the Government showcases massive enrolment and construction of classrooms, 7 out of 10 children in Grade 3 cannot read Grade 2 level Swahili, 8 out of 10 cannot do Math and 9 out of 10 cannot read English. Rajani therefore recommends to change the method of development. Instead of calling on experts, development should aim at creating favorable conditions for people themselves to develop solutions and make things happen, by increasing the access and use of information.
