Sauti za Wananchi | Data on electricity provision

At Twaweza, we firmly believe in partnerships, with both government entities and other public organizations.  Recently, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) used the Sauti za Wananchi initiative to monitor the electricity sector and the work of TANESCO. The results, which were presented in a workshop on 8 December 2015, highlighted citizens’ frustrations with power cuts, among other things.

More than 6 out of 10 (66%) citizens agree that power cuts last longer than planned, and almost 3 out of 4 (73%) don’t think there is enough information on planned power cuts. The workshop brought together key stakeholders in the electricity sector, including agencies like the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), and private solar companies to discuss the challenges in providing electricity to a nation as vast as Tanzania.

The importance of solar power as an alternative was also highlighted, and there was a discussion on improving the information channels for solar products. The workshop was well received by stakeholders, as it created an understanding of where the main issues lie with respect to electrification and generated positive ideas on resolving issues and improving communication.
