Draft Constitution in the news

Sauti za Wananchi recently launched a brief on the Draft Constitution, Drafting the Law of the Land: Reflections of citizens in mainland Tanzania on the draft constitution, which generated debate in the Tanzanian print media

Some of the key findings highlighted in the brief are:

  • 67% of mainland Tanzanians know that the draft constitution was launched,  with  36% of mainland Tanzanians engaging  with the constitutional review process
  • 70% of mainland Tanzanians want cabinet ministers appointed outside of Parliament More than half of the respondents (65%) believe the country will have a new constitution by 2015.

The Citizen highlighted that Mainland Tanzanians were torn on whether Tanzania should have three governments (Union, Mainland, and Zanzibar) – with 51% agreeing with the clause.

The Guardian highlighted that 91% of Mainland Tanzanians want underperforming MPs to be ousted where they fail to undertake their duties.

The brief was also referenced in Tanzania Daima and mentioned on Choice  FM during the Choice in the Morning show.
