Government moves to scrutinize tax exemptions

The Ministry of Finance has formed a task force to scrutinize tax exemptions in Tanzania. The recommendations of the task force will be presented in Parliament during the budget session in June 2011. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Dr Servacius Likwelile, is quoted in the Daily News, saying that the Government will reduce tax exemptions to increase Government revenue. The paper relates the Government's new stance on tax exemptions to an Uwazi policy brief that highlights a rise in tax exemptions between 2006 to 2010. The Controller and Auditor General’s report released this week states that lenient tax exemptions contribute to revenue collections below target.  Read more
