Healthy ambitions? New brief on Kenya's NHIF

The International Budget Partnership (IBP) released its 14th budget brief on May 28, 2012 in Nairobi, entitled Healthy Ambitions? Kenya's National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Must Become More Transparent if it is to Anchor Universal Health Coverage. As the NHIF is increasingly playing a larger role in Kenya's health system, it is being called upon to open its books to the public. The report was co-authored by Dr. Jason Lakin and Vivian Magero. Lakin is housed by Twaweza in Kenya as an associate and Twaweza participated in the launch of the brief.

The Kenya Budget Visualisation Dashboard from Uwazi is now up. The site allows citizens to view how public funds were spent by financial year from 2002 to 2011, and within each county of the country.

Food consumption up, access to clean water down in Dar es Salaam

Round 11 of the Listening to Dar survey asked questions on food consumption and perceptions of economic hardship to 358 residents of Dar es Salaam. There was a slight increase (from 59.3 percent to 64.5 percent) in those who reported eating three meals a day in April compared to January 2012. Nevertheless, the figure is still lower than the 72.3 percent who reported eating three meals a day during the baseline study in 2010. This survey round also found that certain foods, particularly fish, have become somewhat more affordable since the start of 2012.
