Uwezo Kenya to launch 2011 National Assessment Report July 19

Women Educational Researchers of Kenya (WERK) has announced on its website that the report of 2011 Uwezo National Assessment will be launched on 19th July 2011 at the Kenya Institute of Education (KIE). At the same time regional launches will be taking place in various regions namely: Western, Rift Valley, Central, Eastern, North Eastern, Coast, and Eldoret. The aim of having the regional launches is to incorporate a wider pool of Educational stakeholders in the release of the findings therefore encouraging citizen action in promoting the quality of education.

ShujaazFM wins One World Media Award

ShujaazFM, Kenya's interactive multimedia project and Twaweza partner, has scooped the 2011 One World Media Special Award, honoring 'the most outstanding media coverage of the developing world.' Its success to inspire millions of young Kenyans surpassed all expectations. Rob Burnet, the founder, did research and gathered creative artists to form a team with the aim to produce 2 million comic books. At the ceremony in London on May 10, he said, that in less than two years, Shujaaz FM distributed 5 million copies of its popular comic book.

Budget Visualisation Dashboard Launched

Uwazi at Twaweza has just launched an easy to use Budget Visualisation Dashboard. The aim is to make the use of public money in Tanzania -- from both taxpayers and donors -- more accessible and understandable. As a result citizens, journalists, members of Parliament and NGOs will now be in a better position to know how the money is spent, and to ask questions about it. The information can be viewed in different ways.

World Bank Chief Economist praises Twaweza

When Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President for Development Economics of the World Bank, Mr Justin Yifu Lin visited Twaweza on May 2, he said he was encouraged by Twaweza's focus on citizen agency and service delivery.The meeting with Twaweza was part of the World Bank delegation's official visit to Tanzania.

New 2011 Calendar Released

Twaweza's 2011 calendar, released in conjunction with Uwezo Tanzania, focuses on learning. It provides tools for measuring children's literacy and prompts citizens to take action. Over 250,000 copies are being distributed across Tanzania.

The Twaweza co-produced edition of Makutano Junction runs on Citizen TV

Season 11 of the famous Makutano Junction drama has started running on Kenyan Citizen TV channel on Wednesdays at 7.35 am. This particular edition of the series was co-produced by Twaweza and Mediae and seeks to raise public awareness on issues that affect citizens everyday life like basic education, health and water and encourage them to take charge, engage with the processes and demand for better services.

Learning inequalities in Kenya favour children from wealthier families

"Article 53 of Kenya's constitution emphasizes every child has an equal right to education however the question we raise is does every child have an equal opportunity?" says Sara Ruto, the Uwezo Regional manager.
